PEBA - White

PEBA (polyether block amide) is a nylon–polyether elastomer: hard polyamide segments plus soft polyether blocks. FDM grades are usually around Shore 85A–95A. Versus TPU of similar hardness it is lighter, springier, and stays flexible in the cold — it stores and returns energy instead of damping it. Chemistry that matters: PEBA is a segmented block copolymer (often PA12-based hard phase). The nylon blocks give chemical resistance and a higher softening point; the polyether blocks give rebound and low-temperature flexibility. Density is typically about 1.00–1.02 g/cm³, roughly 15–20% lighter than common TPU 95A. Soft-segment Tg is below 0 °C. Moisture: The polyamide phase is hygroscopic. Water uptake can be around 1–2% depending on grade. Wet PEBA strings, bubbles, and loses layer strength. Dry at about 70–80 °C for several hours and store sealed. Polyether chemistry still resists hydrolysis better than many polyester TPUs in wet service. Mechanics (printed parts): Typical printed XY tensile strength is about 16–36 MPa with elongation often 500–1000%+. Flexural modulus is only on the order of 65–100 MPa. Rebound (Bayshore / resilience) is commonly about 60–78%, which is the property TPU usually cannot match. Impact tests often report no break in-plane. Z-stretch and tear drop if layers are weak. Heat and cold: Vicat is often about 90–110 °C at light load; HDT under real load is much lower (around 50–75 °C on some grades). The useful trick is the cold end: parts stay elastic well below freezing, with some grades claiming flexibility to about −40 to −60 °C. Chemicals and wear: Good resistance to many oils, fuels, non-polar solvents, and ozone. Abrasion numbers can be excellent (DIN wear under 50 mm³ on some sheets). It is still an elastomer — not a rigid chemical tank. Print reality: Nozzle typically 220–260 °C, bed 50–100 °C, fan moderate, direct drive preferred. Speeds can be higher than soft TPU if the filament is dry. Brass is fine. Enclosure is optional. Usability: Choose PEBA when the part must bounce back — midsoles, lattices, sports dampers, cold-weather flex parts, light seals, and wearables where TPU feels dead or heavy. Versus TPU-95A it wins on rebound, weight, and cold flexibility; TPU still wins on price, print familiarity, and some oil-grip applications. It is the wrong material for rigid brackets or hot loaded structures. Dry it like nylon, feed it like a flexible, and design for energy return.
